Ask children to describe the family and ask who are the people in the photo. The people standing behind the photo are the family used for the statue and the sculptor, Gillian Wearing, who stands in the middle. The two woman depicted in the photo are sisters, Roma and Emma Jones and their children, Kyan and Shaye. Gillian said she wanted to show that the idea of what makes a family isn't fixed. She liked how the sisters spoke of their closeness and how they supported each other. The statue got lots of people talking on social media about their own families and what families looked like: "No such thing as a "real" family.   Rare Antarctic penguin accidentally travels 3,000km to New Zealand - BBC News A penguin from Antarctica got lost last week and travelled 3000 km to New Zealand. The Adelie penguin was found by locals looking lost on the shore. A local resident, Harry Singh, was the first to spot the penguin but at first thought it was a soft toy, until the penguin moved its head. Mr Singh said the bird looked exhausted and didn’t move for an hour. He was worried another animal might take it for food.   Mr Singh took the penguin to a penguin sanctuary; they were shocked that the bird had travelled so far. This is only the third time that an Adelie penguin has been found on New Zealand.   The penguin is being nursed back to health and will be released back in to the sea when it is fully recovered.   -           Where do Penguins usually live? -           Show on a map how the bird travelled fro...

stick library

Image
Innovative 10-year-old creates 'stick library' for local dogs - CNN D  10 year old Jeremiah Carter from Canada devised a plan to keep himself busy and help residents living in his community.   Jeremiah built a stick library for dogs. The idea was that dogs would have a collection of sticks that could be used to play fetch. He first had to decide how big the library needed to be and then collect and measure wood. He also had to cut it down to the right size.   The finished library was delivered to the local park and tied to a fence so that it wouldn’t go missing. Jeremiah then started to build a collection of sticks. He filled up the box and returned the next day to see if anything had happened.   Jeremiah was astonished to find all the ticks had gone. Clearly the library was being used.   Jeremiah’s Dad said, “It seemed to make people happy and it’s given him some enjoyment and a bit of purpose. It seems to be a good thing for the community. It can connec...

Mum shares photos of Locklan and his changing hair with other parents on social media. Mum says, "It's cool to see how other kids' ha...

When she was 9, she wrote to Disney to ask if they could include a character in one of their films who wore glasses. In 2022 the film Encanto has a main character called Mirabel, who is funny and brave, and wears glasses. Lowri says she wrote the letter because she is the only person in her family who wears glasses. She says, "I felt a bit alone and didn't feel like I was beautiful enough." The film's director, Jared Bush, says when Lowri wrote to Disney, they were already planning on including a main character in Encanto who wore glasses, but he was not allowed to tell Lowri at the time that her wish was about to be made true. Lowri says, "I was just so happy that, even if it wasn't from my letter or anything, young girls and boys now have a role model to look up to." She says her glasses are an important part of her identity. "I w...
