‘Two are stronger than one’: Boston Marathon duo praised for helping struggling runner cross finish line | Boston Marathon | The Guardian

What do you see in the picture? Where are they, what are they doing, what do you think the story might be about?

The picture shows the finish line at the Boston marathon in the USA last week.

How long is a marathon? What do you think it feels like to run a marathon?

A marathon is 26 miles. In the middle you can see Ajay Haridasse who got to the finish line but then stumbled and fell. He tried to get up but he couldn’t.

Why do you think he couldn’t get up?

Ajay tried to get up 4 times but each time he collapsed. He decided he would have to crawl to the finish line. He started crawling and lots of people ran past him, eager to get to the finish themselves.

How do you think Ajay felt crawling along a road seeing others run past him?

Two runners decided to stop and help. Aaron Beggs from Northern Ireland appeared at Ajay’s side and pulled him to his feet. Ajay stumbled again and Robson De Oliviera from Brazil appeared on his other side. Robson and Aaron helped him walk to the finish line.

What do you think they said to Ajay when they stopped?
What do you think they said as they picked him up?
What do you think Ajay said?
Do you think Robson and Aaron knew Ajay?

Both Robson and Aaron had times they wanted to beat and they both ended up being a lot slower because they stopped to help. Ajay said after the run that he was shocked they stopped to help; “There was no reason for them to do that.”

Do you agree? Why do you think they chose to stop?

Ajay, Robson and Aaron are all from different countries so why did they help each other?

The photo went viral around the world. Everyone praised Aaron and Robson for a “beautiful moment of sportsmanship”

What does that mean?
What can we learn from Aaron and Robson?
Why is this about No Outsiders?
Which British Value is this about?
