A community bookshop in Southampton had to move because the rent went up and they could not afford to stay in their building. They managed to raise funds to buy an old building 150 metres away but had to find a way of moving their 2000 books.

How would a shop usually move 2000 books?
The bookshop couldn't afford to rent a van so had to think of another idea.

Looking at the picture, how do you think they moved the books?
The local community came to the rescue, lots of people turned up on the day and stood in a line stretching from the old shop to the new shop.
Once everyone was in the line, what did they do?
A human chain from the old bookshop to the new bookshop passed the books to their new home.
What is a human chain? (At this point I will get some children up to the front to demonstrate)
Jani Franck, who joined the human chain said, "It's amazing. The power of community coming together and achieving something like this."

- What is a community?
- What do you notice about the people - how are they similar, how are they different?
- What are bookshops for?
- Why do the people in this town want to help their bookshop stay open?
- How does a human chain work? Why did people give up their time to pass books along a chain?
- How do you think the people in the chain felt as they passed the books? In the photo lots of the people are smiling, why?
- What does this story and photo tell us about people living in the UK today?
- What can we learn from the people in the photo?
- Why is this story about No Outsiders?
