pyjamas

What do you see in the picture? Who are they, where are they, what is behind them, what do you think their roles are in the story, what could this story be about?

Larry Farrish Jnr. is a school bus driver in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He drives the bus to school every day and so he gets to know the children.

Why/ how does he get to know the children?

One day he noticed one of the boys, Levi, was upset.

Larry said, "Normally, when I pull up, he's standing there waiting for me with a big smile but on this day he was sitting on the ground with a jacket over his head."

Why do you think Levi was doing that?
How do you think Levi was feeling?
What do you think Larry did?

Levi got on the bus and Larry said, "Hey buddy, what's wrong?"

Levi told Larry it was pyjama day today....

What is pyjama day?
Why do you think Levi was upset?

Levi told Larry tearfully that he didn't have any pyjamas to wear. Then Levi went to the back of the bus and sat down by himself.

Larry drove the bus to the school as normal but when all the children got off, instead of driving back to the garage, Larry went somewhere else.

Where do you think Larry went?

Larry thought, "I gotta fix this!"

How can Larry fix this?

Larry drive to a shop and bought two pairs of pyjamas for Levi. He went back to the school and handed them in at the office.

Why did he do that?
How do you think Levi felt when he saw the pyjamas?
Do you think Larry asked Levi to pay for them? Why not?

Levi hugged the pyjamas to his chest and thanked Larry.
Levi later said, "I can tell Larry is nice and his heart is filled with joy. When he got me the pyjamas I did a happy cry"

Why do you think Levi thinks Larry's heart is filled with joy?
What is a happy cry?
Does Levi need to buy something for Larry now?

Levi got pyjamas, but what else did Levi learn that day?
What can we learn from Levi (to speak up when we feel upset; if he had remained silent, there would be no story here)
Is there anything the school could have done to make sure everyone could join in pyjama day?
What can we learn from Larry?
Why is this about No Outsiders?
Which British value is this about?
