Different families

What do you see in the picture? What do you think the story is, why do you think this made the news- what might be unusual about this story?

Philadelphia zoo has welcomed four new baby hatchlings from a pair of tortoises. The babies are Galapagos tortoises and are an endangered species.

What is a hatching?
What does endangered species mean?

The mother is a first-time mum. The reason this has made the news is because she is over 100 years old. The mum is the oldest resident in the zoo and this is the first time in 150 years that the zoo has had tortoise hatchlings.

The tortoise, called Mommy, has lived at the zoo since 1932 and is thought to be 97 years old. The father is called Abrazzo and is 96 years old.

Do you think 97 is too old to be a mum?

Mommy laid a clutch of 16 eggs in November last year and the zoo is hoping more of the eggs will hatch in the coming weeks. All the hatchlings are "doing well, eating and behaving appropriately" say the zoo.

What is a family?
What do you think is the most important thing about a family?
Does age matter?

Philadelphia zoo president and CEO Joe-Elle Mogerman says, "Philadelphia Zoo's vision is that those hatchlings will be part of a thriving population of Galapagos tortoises on our healthy planet years from now."

Some people might say this is not a proper family because they are too old - what would you say?
