What do you see in the picture? How are the dogs similar and how are they different? What do you think this story is about?

Amos is a staffy cross dog who was born blind. Amos loves going on walks accompanied by his very own guide dog, Toby..

Jess Martin volunteers at the Cheshire Dog Home and adopted Amos when he was born there after his mum was bought in. Jess thought someone would adopt him and wrap him in cotton wool, never taking him on adventures and giving him a really boring life like a house cat. She wanted to make sure he led a fulfilling life.

When the two dogs met, Toby would help out Amos, protecting him from other dogs that bounded up too quickly. On their first day, Amos wasn’t sure where to drink from and Toby took a very loud drink form the water bowl before gently pushing Amos toward the bowl to show him where it was.

Toby began to lead Amos on walks. In the beginning, Amos would gently bite on to Toby’s tail and allow himself to be led, by then they developed a body bumping technique so that they don’t lose each other. Watch this video and look out for the body bumping.

·                Why was Jess worried Amos would lead a really boring life?

-          What do you think are the challenges for Amos? How can Amos overcome those challenges?

·                Jess thought someone would treat Amos “like a house cat,” how do you think that could happen? How are house cats treated differently to dogs?

·                Why do you think when they first met Toby drank noisily?

·                Why did Amos bite on Toby’s tail and why is body bumping a better technique?

·                What can we learn from Toby and Amos?

·                Why is this about No Outsiders, which British value is this about?
