Musical postbox spreading Christmas cheer in Glasgow - BBC News

Musical post boxes have appeared in three cities in the UK – Swansea, Glasgow, London and Belfast. Some post boxes this year are decorated with snowmen, stars and snowflakes. If you post a letter, the post box will sing a Christmas tune to you. You can watch a short video showing the post box in action in the BBC clip above.

Sometimes you don’t even have to post a letter, just walking past will make the post box start singing.

Why do you think someone has invented a musical postbox?

Watch the video, what does everyone do when the music starts? (Smile) Why do you think the post box makes everyone smile?

Do you recognise the songs?

How do you think it works?

The musical post boxes have been provided for the public by the Royal Mail – what is the Royal Mail? The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Patricia McAllister says, “There is nothing better than sending Christmas cards to friends and family to spread some festive cheer. Hopefully this will encourage everyone to keep up the tradition.”

What is a tradition?

Why do people send cards?

How do you think a musical post box might help to keep up that tradition?

Some people have different celebrations and don’t celebrate Christmas; is it ok if the post box sings Christmas songs when they walk past?
Does the post box check who a person is before it starts singing?
What can we learn from the musical post box?
