The babies are Galapagos tortoises and are an endangered species. What is a hatching? What does endangered species mean? The mother is a first-time mum. The reason this has made the news is because she is over 100 years old. The mum is the oldest resident in the zoo and this is the first time in 150 years that the zoo has had tortoise hatchlings. The tortoise, called Mommy, has lived at the zoo since 1932 and is thought to be 97 years old. The father is called Abrazzo and is 96 years old. Do you think 97 is too old to be a mum?
